Hello, my name is Pastor Lesly Bertrand from Grace Family Assembly Church and Way Bible Institute in Port au Prince, Haiti. This is my Cross story of how Jesus called me into ministry and continues to sustain me.
I grew up in Port au Prince, Haiti the youngest of four children. My dad was a mechanic and mom looked after us.
We attended church faithfully every Sunday and practiced all the rituals and traditions. I attended church schools through high school. Voodoo was all around me as many friends left our church to follow the Voodoo Priests. When I was 17 years old Jesus appeared to me in a dream. He said, “Lesly, I’ve come to save you. God is with you. I choose you.”
The next day I met a woman who asked me to accept Jesus Christ as Lord of my life. I surrendered to Jesus. I went home to tell my parents and they were not happy. Immediately they began to persecute me — they refused to feed me until I renounced Jesus. I could not do it.
I began street witnessing for Jesus telling anyone who would listen. Daily I was rummaging through dumps looking for food. This went on for two months. Then as I preached people began giving me food as they listened. During this time, I met my future wife Bernadette.
I became a street preacher and entered Bible School to learn all I could about Jesus. When I graduated Bernadette and I were married and we began Grace Family Assembly Church. We have been ministering together now for 38 years. Seven churches have been started to the Glory of the Lord.
Our ministry is large on miracles. Many healings from pain, sufferings and Voodoo curses.
One night I was called to come and pray for a lady who had passed. It was a two-hour journey away. When I arrived, there was weeping and mourning. I stepped to the woman, laid my hands on her and prayed, “In the authority of the name of Jesus Christ, wake up!”
The lady sat up. She fully recovered.
Twice in my life Voodoo Priests have attacked me and tried to kill me. Both times the Lord made a way for my escape. He delivered me from these hostilities.
My favorite Bible verse is John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” NKJV
The Cross to me is a symbol of salvation because by the death of Jesus and His resurrection we each receive freedom from sin and receive eternal life.
By virtue of this Cross, the community will see that Jesus was crucified for their sins — when they come they will see that Jesus is here. Salvation is theirs for the asking. They will experience that the light of Jesus is stronger than the darkness of Voodoo.
Prayer: Father thank you for establishing this Cross to give you glory for all to see your light shine. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!
