Hello, my name is Pastor Lulama Dick with the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Butterworth, South Africa. I was born in the town of Alice, South Africa. A town that was named after the daughter of the English Queen Victoria. My dad worked for the local University while mom stayed at home to take care of six children. I was number three. Dad had no interest in the things of the Lord so my mom and grandmother made sure all of us children were in church every Sunday. I went to church and I learned the scriptures until they became a part of me. Church became my life.
I went to the University and became a teacher working from 1990 to 2004. During this time, I married my wife Kanyisa, we now have one child.
Then missionaries from Scotland entered my life. They challenged me for Jesus and I accepted. The more they taught me about Jesus the more I wanted to know. I became an Elder. I needed to be closer to Jesus as I felt that I was not doing enough for Him. That’s when I determined to take theological training. In 2008 I was ordained. After going through a probationary period I was ready to serve the Lord.
I served as Pastor for a church until 2012 when I was called to Pastor this church in Butterworth, South Africa — Butterworth is Gcuwa in Xhosa, our native language. It has now been nearly six years since we came here and the Lord has blessed us with a wonderful group of men and women who love the Lord. We have built a firm foundation on Jesus Christ and our church is growing so fast we are now beginning the process to expand our building.
The Lord has blessed me with preaching and singing abilities that draws people to Him. As we preach people find hope, love and understanding. Marriages are healed and peace comes to situations that otherwise would end in disaster.
My favorite Bible verse is Psalm 27:4 “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.” NKJV
The Cross takes us back to the basics. The center of the Church is the symbol of the Cross. It is where Jesus was our sacrifice for all time. This Cross planted will be a light to Jesus. It shows how much He loves us. And it calls to all — come you are welcome here.
Prayer: Father thank you for the ways you creatively draw people to You through Your servants. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!
