Philippians 4:6-7 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts
Hello, my name is Pastor Willard Dauti with the Tabernacle of David Church in Chinhoyi Zimbabwe. This is my ccm Cross Testimony of how Jesus changed my life and there was no turning back. I grew up in Mashonaland Central, 150 kilometers (90 miles) NW of the Capital city of Harare, Zimbabwe. I was 4th of 7 children. My dad was a successful building contractor and my mom watched over the children. Growing up I knew nothing about Christianity as dad and mom followed what we call a traditionalist religion run by the witch doctors.
When we were sick or needed help dad and mom took us to the witch doctors. Over the years I can’t remember one time when we were there that we had a positive result. And each visit cost my parents a lot of money.
During my teen years I wanted to be accepted by my peers. Drinking, smoking and hanging out was the way to impress the girls. I was all in. It caused trouble in my life and as I grew older that type of life style didn’t satisfy me.
I met a group of Scripture Union Teens on their way to a retreat. My life would never be the same. I was 19 and just finishing high school. The preacher at the retreat introduced us to John 3:16. It was the first time I heard about the love of Jesus and I wanted that in my life. I gave my clumsy, booze filled, smoking and hanging out to impress girls life to Jesus. I surrendered my entire mess to Jesus.
No longer did I believe the witch doctors could bring back the spirits of my forefathers or heal anyone. They were swindlers for profit and completely exposed.
I was excited to tell my family that I met Jesus Christ. It did not go well. My parents abandoned me; my siblings ignored me. Every conversation with them was a dead end.
Joshua was the Scripture Union leader who mentored me during the transition. Through his advice I was cleansed by the blood of Jesus and all evil was scrubbed from me. I joined his church and eventually went to work for Scripture Union telling others about the Jesus I had found. I explained His love for me and how to be set free from an evil past.
While working at Scripture Union I met Vinus. She was working at Scripture Union to reach the lost. She came from a solid Christian family where her parents were church elders.
My Scripture Union job was working with 150 High Schools and 300 Junior highs. Life was very busy.
Then the Lord directed me to attend Bible school in Durban, South Africa. I knew Vinus should be with me. We married. Three years later we graduated and our first baby was born, Shekinah.
Once graduated we returned to Zimbabwe and came to Chinhoyi where I was an associate pastor for three years. Then I became the pastor in 2000. It’s been twenty years of serving the Lord here at the Tabernacle of David.
During this time our country has seen a revolution, recession, depression after depression and a complete breakdown of social services. Yet through it all the Lord has been faithful.
When people have been sick and had no money to pay for medical care — Jesus healed.
We experienced a severe drought. The Vice President called for prayer — Jesus answered. The skies opened and rains restored our water supply.
When a lady had 5 miscarriages and the witch doctors finally admitted she would never have a child — she came for prayer. Jesus answered with a baby girl.
There was a string of deadly automobile accidents in our area. The authorities were besides themselves to stop it. They called for prayer — traffic resumed to normal.
We have not recovered from our national economic woes so when we have needs we take them to the Lord. He provides time after time where social services fail.
My favorite Bible verse is Ephesians 2:8: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God” NKJV
The Cross to me is a symbol of what Jesus Christ did when He died on the Cross for me. Even if I was the only man left on earth He would have done that for me. His love is bigger than anyone can imagine.
It is my desire that everyone who sees this Cross should become a bit agitated, a bit unsettled and totally uncomfortable. They know who He is and what He has done. Now they must decide. Their very eternal life is in the balance. It is their time to acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord.
Prayer: Father thank you for the Cross establishing a boundary that every Christian must cross. Give everyone who sees Your Cross here the Holy Spirit inspired moment of acceptance — turning agitation, unsettledness and uncomfortable feelings into the peace of Jesus. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!
